The review panel formed by the United States government decided a Yemeni citizen who was detained in Guantanamo Bay , Cuba , for more than a decade was released .

Mahmud Mujahid ( 33 ) accused of being members of al - Qaeda fighters and a bodyguard of Osama bin Laden .

Mujahid was first put into a detention center belonging to the United States in 2002 but has not yet been formally charged .

Six-person panel decided that he no longer to became threat to the United States .

Previously it was reported as one of dozens of detainees who are considered too dangerous when released but can not be prosecuted for lack of evidence or lack of jurisdiction .

" He should not be arrested and now after 12 years he had reunited with his family , " said Mujahid lawyer , David Remes .

" There is no longer any reason held him in Guantanamo , " he added .

Mahmud Mujahid was recorded as the first prisoner who appeared before the review panel that was formed on the orders of President Barack Obama .

The move was taken in an effort to close the Guantanamo Bay detention total , but now there are 155 prisoners there .
