BlackBerry announces important decisions on Monday (11/14/2013)
morning Canadian time. BlackBerry decided to cancel its intention to sell the company,
received an investment of 1 billion U.S. dollars from other companies, and one
of the most important, change the corporate leaders.
Yes, BlackBerry eventually replaces Thorsten Heinz, the CEO
who has led this Canadian company for almost two years. BlackBerry Heins was
decided to replace the company's former leader Sybase John Chen.
Starting November 2013, Chen will serve as interim CEO and
also one BlackBerry Chairman. While looking for a new CEO, Chen will be
responsible for determining the direction, relationships, and strategic goals BlackBerry.
The big question, who is actually John Chen?
Chen was not the stranger in the world of IT United States. He
is a senior executive in Silicon Valley and into the ranks of the bigwigs in
the Fortune 500. He is also one of the key Sybase saviors in tough times.
Chen had little schooling Mount Hermon School in Northfield.
Completion of school, he continued his education to one of the famous
universities in the United States, Brown University and a degree in electrical
engineering in 1978. A year later, Chen gets a master's degree from the
University Of California Institute Of Technology.
Chen’s career in the IT world is very impressive. Initially,
as quoted from The Globe and Mail, Chen joined to a company called Unisify as a
Design Engineer, before being promoted to vice president in the company as well.
In 1991, the 58-year -old decided to move to Pyramid Technology.
In this company, he served as Executive Vice President, and was appointed President,
Chief Operating Officer, and Director at the company in 1993.
In 1995, Chen moved the company back. This time, Chen chose
other IT companies, Siemens Nixdorf, as Vice President. Later, he was promoted
to President and CEO of Siemens Nixdorf Open Enterprise Computing Division in
1996.
Chen returns “jump “to another company, Sybase, in 1997. At
the beginning of his career in the company’s database system service, Chen
immediately placed as COO and eventually became the CEO and President at one
year thereafter.
The ability of the child refugees from Hong Kong actually
tested on Sybase. Chen, the leader of the company, has to think hard to bring
Syabase who are in a critical period. At that time, Sybase has suffered losses
for four consecutive years.
With the talent and ability, which was born July 1, 1955, is
capable of removing Sybase from the crisis, from a loss into a profit of
hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars, in just one decade alone. Chen also
managed to increase the company's market capitalization of 362 million dollars
to 5.8 billion U.S. dollars.
In 2010, Sybase was bought by one of the IT giant, SAP.
Initially, Chen decided to persist in SAP. However, he decided to leave the
company in early 2012 because it does not also get a senior position.
In 2012, Chen joined the private equity firm Silver Lake as
a senior adviser.
Until now, Chen is still listed as one of the top brass at
Wells Fargo & Company and Walt Disney.
With the wealth of experience they have, will address
challenges Chen to save the BlackBerry, like he did with Sybase? We'll wait.
