Researchers Royal Veterinary College , UK , managed to uncover the mystery of why the hordes of birds usually fly with the formation of a 'V ' .
The new study suggests that it helps saving energy formations of birds , told the Sydney Morning Herald , Friday, January 17, 2014 .
It was revealed after researchers analyzed 14 migratory bird ibis from Austria to Tuscany , the mileage reaches 1,000 miles .
In its report , the researchers say , the V-formation is highly optimized aerodynamics . This form profitable flock of birds , reducing the air pressure were broken by birds leaders who are at the forefront .
Leaders must make sacrifices for the sake of the birds another. To that end , the researchers say , there is a regular succession .
" Over the years , we 've been asked if the bird flapping its wings can save energy , " said Geoffrey Spedding , Director of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Southern California , which did not participate in the study .
" This study answers the question , and the answer is yes , " he said .
Study leader , Jim Usherwood revealed a major challenge during the study . Researchers must prepare studies for approximately three years , ie since the bird was hatched at the Zoo Vienna , March 2011 . Then the researchers monitored the growth of the birds until they migrate to particular regions .
Researchers have also included a young ibis bird in flight test aircraft equipped with a parachute light . Until then the current migratory bird , aircraft parachute then follow the birds .
From the analysis of 24,000 bird wings shows the average bird adjust their positions to optimize round . Bird then re- adjust their current stage of change formations ' V ' .
Unfortunately , the researchers did not break down how much energy can be saved with the formation . Researchers just explained , the formation is able to provide a small advantage over the long migration journey .
Usherwood also explains , how a bird can fly with the formation of the 'V ' precise and neat . According to him , the birds have a sort of rule of thumb or sensors so that they conform with the formation .
The study also said that , experts say the formation of the 'V ' also applies to the duck and pelican .
